Wynn Las Vegas continues its appreciation and commitment of public art as it unveils Jeff Koons’ sculpture Tulips. The transparent color-coated sculpture is made from a mirror-polished stainless steel that will illuminate Wynn Theater rotunda at Wynn Las Vegas.

“Many people believe that Jeff Koons is one of the most important living artists on canvas and in sculpture in the world today. I’m happy to be one of those people and particularly delighted to share with our guests his magnificent creation of the Tulips sculpture, which is now gracing the intersection of Wynn and Encore in our resort, near our showroom lobby. If you see them you will find the experience totally delicious.” said Steve Wynn, Wynn Resorts Chairman and CEO. Photo Credit: Barbara Kraft

Tulips is part of the Koons’ Celebration series which is one of the most complex and biggest sculpture in the series. The sculpture is a stainless steel bouquet of twisted balloon flowers which is plated in a vibrant spectrum of color and a high mirror polish. The sculpture’s glossy surface as well as its color palette gives a reflective effect for the viewer and itself. Koons has been successful in creating an impression that the sculpture is a weightless object when ironically it is heavy. The 3 tons sculpted stainless steel sculpture was acquired in November 2012 at an auction for a price of $33,682,500.

Koons’ Tulips represents the range of concepts and modern interpretation relevant to the contemporary world. His sculpture is part of the Celebration works which explores the child-like innocence concept and chart the milestones of the passing year, represented in this instance, Spring. Identified as a flower that bloom for a short time, the medium used in Tulips invokes immortality, durability and the species’ endurance. The use of the pristine and smooth medium presents the viewers an image of simplicity and joy. Koons is also inspired with themes including life, death and sexuality.

“Tulips is a symbol of hope and the strength of life’s energy. It reflects the viewer to affirm the viewer’s existence. I am thrilled to be in the Wynn collection. Steve Wynn is known for collecting great works of Modern and Contemporary art so to be able to have my sculpture, Tulips, included in his collection has profound meaning to me,” said Jeff Koons.

About the artist
Jeff Koons was born on 1955 at York, Pennsylvania. Koons studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He also studied in Baltimore at the Maryland Institute College of Art where he received a BFA in 1976. Currently, he lives and works in New York City.

Koons received commendations for his public sculptures including Puppy (1992) and Split-Rocker (2000). Puppy, monumental floral sculpture, is shown a Rockefeller Center and later on become a permanent display at the Guggenheim Bilbao. The Split-Rocker was installed at Fondation Beyeler, Papal Palace in Avignon and the Palace of Versailles.

Koon’s cultural achievements have brought him numerous awards and honors. Koons received in 2009 a Singleton Copley Award from the Royal Academy of Arts and he also received The Governor’s Awards for the Arts Distinguished Arts Award. He was also promoted by President Jacques Chirac as Officie de la Legion d’Honneur. He received the first-ever Medal of Art from Secretary of State Clinton as he participated in the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies program.
